It seemed odd that in all of the years I've been reading Lovecraft (going on about 20 I think) I've never drawn a finished Cthulhu before. A few months ago my buddy Gary asked if i wanted to draw the Old God for him as a tattoo design. I was already pondering the thought before he even asked me.

It's one of those where I spent waaaaay too much time on and now I'm sort of non-plussed about it. I like some of what I did, and yet I still feel stuck in my old ways of too much detail, but nothing good coming of it aside from an exercise in value...and a possible tattoo for a friend.

Eh, i swear i draw more than I let on...it's just that with teaching, it's not always the easiest thing to fit in to my schedule. Summer should be better.

I decided to go with a more crustacean (crustaceous?) look for the big guy. His tentacles actually come out of tubes in an opening in his face, and his body is more segmented than I've ever seen him drawn before. I know he's supposed to be this rubbery monstrosity but I figured he could look more like a barnacle-covered nightmare since he's spent millenia beneath the waves.
