This was from the first and only fan letter I ever submitted to a comic book way back in 1996 or '97. The Maxx used to be my favorite comic until it subsequently vanished.
Well, technically, now The Goon is my favorite comic book. Check it out if you get a chance. Very good, humorous, and well told. Eric Powell (artist and writer) won an Eisner Award for it.
My picture never did make it in the book, but a fellow Deviant (and talented illustrator in his own right) Dholms did have one printed on the back page.
By the way, I really ejoy your artwork and your style. I appreciate anyone who can do good stuff with grayscale markers. I've seen your work in Exalted and whatnot and you've been on my DeviantWatch list for over a year now
Any advice to someone who wants to do illustration for gaming magazines and books? I mean, aside from practice, practice, practice and submit, submit, submit? I've had limited success...very little printed, nothing paying, a few promises to keep my art on file here and there. I'm a certified teacher, so that's how I pay the bills, but my dream is to be a moderately successful illustrator.
Thank you for your comment and your time.
Peace.

i've heard of the Goon, but never read it.. what's it about? i should do some research...
thanks for watching me, i appreciate it, and i'm happy you like my artwork too, of course. ^_^
hmm, let's seee... i actually don't really know much of anything about the gaming/illustration field, the only people i've done work for is White Wolf. a lot of gaming companies frequent conventions, like the MegaCon, GenCon, DragonCon, and the International San Diego Convention.. those are great spots to find people and make contacts. even if you don't get any work directly from it, you never know who knows who, and how networking might help you later on. White Wolf goes to several conventions throughout the year, so i'm sure other game companies do as well. plus, if you can find people in person, it's a lot better to show them your work that way than sending a faceless portfolio in the mail.
but, you're right: it sounds lame, but submit submit submit, practice practice practice. i think the best thing to do is be persistent, and find the right people who'd be into your stuff. if you're into doing more Tolkien-style fantasy stuff, maybe TSR is the place to go. more Asian stuff, White Wolf's Exalted is a good fit. darker, grittier stuff, maybe White Wolf's Vampire game... there are a ton of companies with a ton of games and magazines, so you just gotta figure out where to go, i guess. i wish i could offer more advice, but i'm still pretty new to the gaming illustration thing, and i haven't done anything besides White Wolf and this other guy who's starting up a new company, but he stumbled across my stuff rather than me submitting, so sometimes that can happen, too.
if you have anything else to ask, don't hesitate! i'll see what i can do. good luck!

Plus, there are lots of zombies (from your comments on some of my stuff you seem to appreciate zombies) and good old fashioned fist-a-cuffs.
Thank you for the advice and such...I keep drawing and submitting, and I figure something will come along, just a bit frustrating is all.
Peace.
